I use a lot of recipes that have ingredients you would find in the cupboard or fridge all the time.
I also have a lot of recipes that I cook often that only take a few minutes to prepare and cook but taste great. Reason being when I get home late from work or somewhere its easy to grab a couple of things and whip something up fast and with no fuss.
If you are a more adventurous type of cook you could do a section devoted to dinner party or celebration type meals that take in christmas as well..always useful. Dont forget the vegetarians as well aside from the fact that vegetarian food can taste wonderful and its not just lumping different veggies onto a plate.
There is a show here in Australia on cable called 4 ingredients. They do some amazing things with just, yep, 4 ingredients. They also have their own cookbooks and they do inspire you to cook simple great tasting food. Have a look for some ideas and a bit of inspiration.
Also you could include a section of different cuisines based on country of origin...ie. Greek, German, Japanese...you get the drift.
I started my cookbook with Cookie recipes, banana nut breads, and cakes. As you can tell I like sweets. Also, for thanksgiving I got some stuffing recipes, and corn bread dishes.
Soup and stew recipes are great to have on hand. Also, a lot of Italian recipes are pretty easy to fix, so I have a lot of those types of recipes on hand too.
you must have Tiger Toast in a personal cook book.
Vegemite on bread, cheddar cheese stripes( sprinkle with dried onion for a gourmet touch) grill to browning mmmmmmmm a favorite from an aussie.
Your Family Heirloom Recipes.
Only put in your cookbook dishes that you like to eat. Someone might find it and decide to cook something for YOU someday.
put at least one tofu recipe in there, you never know when you or someone else might need it! and pizza, cookies, and other baked goods.
favorite dishes you and anyone you may cook for like to eat at home.
